MSA Security Partners with Puppies Behind Bars

NEW YORK, NY, February 19, 2006 – MSA Security, a specialized security company that since 1987 has served as an industry leader in high consequence threat protection, is happy to announce its partnership with Puppies Behind Bars (PBB) in New York City as its primary provider of canines for its Explosive Detection Canine (EDC) program, the largest private EDC operation in the United States.

“We feel fortunate that such a philanthropic organization like PBB has given MSA the opportunity to acquire such healthy, well cared for, and socialized dogs,” says EDC Director John Harvey.  “This partnership will have a profound impact on the quality of our bomb dog program.”

PBB (http://www.puppiesbehindbars.com/overview-explosive-detection-program.htm) canines have been screened for aptitude, drive and suitability for EDC work.  PBB runs a program that trains prison inmates to raise puppies to become guide dogs for the blind and EDCs for law enforcement.  In 2004, 87% of their guide dog puppies and 96% of their explosive-detection canines went on to formal training.  In addition to MSA Security, PBB places canines with the w York City Police Department Bomb Squad; Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; the State Department; and other federal agencies

MSA Security provides only single handler, single purpose bomb dog teams trained solely in explosive detection, which is unique in the industry.  Handlers are experts in the explosive detection security field, with years of specialized law enforcement and military experience.  EDC teams maintain the highest industry certifications and standards, and bomb dogs are trained and tested on high and low explosives, including triacetone triperoxide (TATP).  The teams are certified in accordance with United States Army standards AR 190-12 and the North American Police Work Dog Association standards.  Additionally, the teams receive the Department of Justice National Odor Recognition Test on a quarterly basis.  All EDC teams are certified under the Department of Homeland Security SAFETY Act.
