MSA Security EDC Handlers Save a Life
NEW YORK, NY, July 9, 2011 — Two of MSA Security's Explosive Detection Canine (EDC) handlers, Peter Cuneen and Robert Brennan, saved a 54-year-old man’s life today when he suddenly collapsed to the ground at the Staten Island Ferry's Whitehall Terminal bicycle holding area. Upon being notified of the situation, Cuneen and Brennan responded to the incident and found that the man was unconscious and not breathing. Cuneen immediately turned the man to his back and began administering CPR; Brennan responded to the terminal’s command center to retrieve the Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Then Brennan administered two AED shocks, after which the man regained consciousness. The man was stabilized by the two EDC handlers and transported to the hospital by emergency medical personnel. He is now recovering from cardiac arrest.
Margaret Gordon, Executive Director of Safety & Security for the New York City Department of Transportation’s Ferry Division was quoted as saying that the incident was a “huge victory as stories like this don't generally turn out positive.”
Both EDC handlers will be receiving Letters of Commendation from MSA Security for their heroic efforts.
