Overview

The federal terrorism trial of Adis Medunjanin is underway and anticipated to occur for three more weeks.  Medunjanin is the high school classmate of Najibullah Zazi accused of assisting him in the 2009 New York City subway terror plot.  Zazi's thwarted suicide terror plot called for using peroxide-based explosives derived from standard ingredients readily available in beauty supply stores.

In April 2010, MSA Security’s Research & Intelligence Analysis Team provided special analysis on Zazi’s plan.  The brief, titled “Key Lessons Learned from the New York City Subway Terror Plot,” highlighted the operatives use of the terrorist attack cycle.  The details included how Zazi conducted preoperational surveillance by riding the subways in Manhattan.

Zazi, who has already pleaded guilty to his role in the plot, completed his testimony yesterday against Medunjanin.  Since the trial began this week, Zazi has explained his target search in New York City, described the suicide bombing plot in more detail, and discussed his overseas training.  Recent highlights include how Zazi considered targeting Walmart, the New York Stock Exchange, and Times Square prior to choosing the New York City subway system.  Zazi also said his methods were intended to send a message to the United States, especially President Barack Obama, to remove American troops in Afghanistan.  He explained how al Qaeda trainers abroad gave him a “very simple” formula for making suicide bombs with easily accessible materials.  Additionally, the group’s third alleged conspirator, Zarein Ahmedzay, who has also pleaded guilty to the plot, testified against Medunjanin earlier in the week.

Implications

The Medunjanin trial reinforces the terror threat posed by U.S. permanent residents or citizens with overseas connections.  It emphasizes how terrorist operatives utilize readily available, easily accessible materials for bomb-making.  Addressed in the trial details are how the operatives continually incorporated elements of the terrorist attack cycle in their plans. Given the significance of the case, as some say Zazi's plan was one of the most serious nationwide threats following 9/11, MSA is tracking developments and will continue to provide updates throughout the trial.  Updates will be posted to the MSA Security Blog.
