There have been some unusual items sent during this past holiday season as gifts that have shown up in the mail and been sent to the MSA SmartTech™ Operations Center (EOC) for review by our Bomb Technicians. I have included some below, which will serve as great training images for your library.
It is important for X-ray screeners to remember that 'different' or 'unusual' does not always mean there is a potential threat. It does mean, however, that a second look will be necessary in order to figure out what the object is, and decide if it should be allowed into your facility.
X-ray Image #1:
MSA COMMENTS:
This is a weather related X-ray. As cold as it has been outside lately, the person receiving this package is probably going to chop up all the furniture in the house and burn it to keep warm! Then of course, he or she will open a nice bottle of red wine and have a glass or two next to the fireplace. All jokes aside, is this something that belongs in the office? At the least, screeners might want to notify security and let them decide.
X-ray Image #2:
This is very pretty, but could be very deadly. Again, does it belong in the office? Maybe, but screeners should make sure they notify someone about it!
MSA COMMENTS:
Any blue object that comes to a point may be something to look closer at. The only way that I know that the object in the middle of the X-ray image is a letter opener, is that I actually have one just like it. I use it during X-ray training to get screeners to understand that edged threat objects can take many different shapes. I also try to explain that almost every typical office building has sharps such as this already inside their facility; so, screeners can concentrate on finding larger threats such as the ax or sword.

This last image is one I found online, and I just want to use to keep you honest. For all of the screeners who have never found a real Imporivsed Explosive Device (IED) during screening, here is an 'UNREAL IED' put out as comic relief. I hope that you never do find a real IED, but you have to keep looking. If only X-ray screening for IEDs was this simple.
